Today's Daily Spark

One question a day. Answer to unlock theirs.

Both of you get the same question every day, wherever you are, because it rolls over at midnight UTC rather than your midnight. You only see their answer once you've written yours. This is today's real question from the app.

✦ Daily Spark

What's one small thing I do that you'd miss most if we were apart?

This stays on this page. Nothing you type here is sent anywhere.

Two ways to play apart

On a call, or on your own time.

Most couples' games assume you're both free at the same moment. With a time difference, you often aren't.

● Live

Play Together

Pick a game and it shows up on their phone as an invite. Tap once and you're both in, playing the same cards in the same order. On a FaceTime call? Play it inside the call with SharePlay, and see and hear each other in picture in picture while you play.

  1. You send an invite to Four in a Row
  2. They tap it. You're both in.
  3. 2–1 to them. Rematch.
◐ Anytime

Play Anytime

Answer your round now. They answer theirs whenever they wake up. Neither of you sees the other's answers until you've both finished, and then you see how many you matched.

  1. You answer Hot Takes in Dubai
  2. They answer on the train in London
  3. 7 of 10 in sync. Now you have something to talk about.

Wherever you both are

Three ways to connect. One of them works on a plane.

One phone

Pass it back and forth on the sofa. Nothing to set up and no internet needed.

Same room, two phones

Your phones connect to each other directly, with no internet and no server. That works on a flight, at a campsite, or when the Wi-Fi is down.

Any distance

Pair your phones once and you're connected for good. Invites, turns, chat and nudges get through, even when one of you was offline when they were sent.

Not just questions

The games you grew up with, made for two.

Real rules, dealt fairly, on one phone or two. And with Play Anytime, a game of chess can take a week: your move now, theirs tonight.

Card games

Color Clash in six house-rule versions, Spades, Hearts, Court Piece and Rang, Judgement, Twenty-Nine, Gin, Indian Rummy, Crazy Eights, Go Fish, Durak, Scopa and more.

Board classics

Chess and Chess960, Ludo, Snakes & Ladders, Backgammon, Checkers, Reversi, Mancala, Nine Men's Morris, Sea Battle, Dots and Boxes, Ultimate Tic-Tac-Toe.

Playground games

Hand Cricket with the odd-or-even toss, Rock Paper Scissors, Hangman, Word Duel, Word Chain, Name Place Animal Thing, Five Dice and a Sudoku race.

The library

121 games. Sorted by mood.

Some are for a quick laugh, some are for a long talk, and some are just for you two. Tap a game to see what's in it.

    Try one here

    Pick one, with one phone.

This is the one-phone mode from the app, running in your browser. You pick without them seeing, hand the phone over, they pick, and then you both see where you matched.

    Who's playing?

    Between games

Your own space, not another group chat.

    • Chat that's just for you two. You can see when they're typing and when they've read it, and invites to games appear right in the conversation.
    • Nudges. One tap sends "thinking of you", "goodnight" or "miss you", with a little burst on their screen.
    • Call them from Twine. One tap starts FaceTime. Once you're on the call, any game can be played inside it.
    • Snap Swap. Send a photo of right now. It stays locked on their phone until they send one back — then you both open them together.
    • Your turn, waiting. Games they've started with Play Anytime sit on your home screen until you answer.
    • A journey you build together. Streaks, milestones, and a record of how in sync you've been.

    Private by design

Built so that we can't read it.

Your chat, nudges, game turns and video are encrypted on your phone and can only be opened on theirs. Our server passes them along but doesn't hold the key to open them.

    Questions

    Good questions.

How does the free version work?

Start 3 games a day from a library of 41, as many rounds as each game has. Chat, nudges and the Daily Spark never count, and neither does joining a game your partner started. Twine+ ($24.99 a year, first week free) removes the limit and opens all 121 games.

Do we both need the app?

For two phones, yes. Each of you installs Twine, signs in with Apple, and adds the other with your Twine codes; then you pair once. For one-phone games you only need one copy.

We're in different time zones. Does that work?

That's what Twine is built for. With Play Anytime you each answer when it suits you, and the Daily Spark is the same question for both of you whatever your time zone. If one of you is offline, invites and turns wait until they're back.

    Do I need an account?

Only to play apart. You sign in with Apple and share just your name — Twine never asks for your email. Playing on one phone, or on two phones in the same room, needs no account at all.

    Can you read our messages?

No. Once you've paired, your chat, nudges, game turns and video are encrypted on your phone and can only be opened on your partner's. Games played with a one-off room code before pairing are sent over an encrypted connection but aren't end-to-end encrypted, and the privacy policy says so.

    Is there an Android version?

Not yet. Twine is for iPhone, iOS 17 and later.

    How do we cancel Twine+?

In your iPhone's Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions. Apple handles the billing, so we never see your card.

    Closer than it looks.

Twine is on the App Store for iPhone. Free to start: 3 games a day from 41, and no account needed to play on one phone.
